Lily stared out into the night sky, waiting on a hilltop for her husband James to return from his scouting mission with Remus Lupin. She lightly pressed her hand against her protruding stomach and smiled. Soon, their precious son would be ready to join them in the world. She could feel her baby moving around, anxious and alert.
"They say a pregnant woman radiates beauty. After seeing you, I have to agree." Lily turned around and gasped when she saw Bellatrix Black, no, Lestrange since she had married, materialize from the shadows. Just like the dark haired beauty to cloak herself in shadows. The woman was practically a part of the gloomy veil.
Lily reached for her wand when Bellatrix's voice stopped her. "I wouldn't do that. After all, you have to provide for that child still inside of you, and it would be dreadfully hard to do that if you are dead."
"What are you doing here, Bellatrix?" Lily hissed. "You have no right to be here." She acutely remembered the eldest Black sister. Bellatrix was a pureblood snob to the highest degree, belonging to the Black family that demanded purity. Not to mention that Bellatrix was gorgeous, achingly so. There was no one, male or female, who did not turn their head when Bellatrix walked by.
A plain looking, red haired mudblood like herself was nothing compared to her, and during their schooling years, Bellatrix made her sure that Lily never forgot that. During bathroom breaks between classes, Bellatrix would shove Lily into one of the stalls, pressing her against the wall, her leg between Lily's own, and their mouths hovering so close to one another. Bellatrix would use that time to taunt and insult Lily, before closing the distance between their lips for a brutal kiss. It was horrible and humiliating.
Lily secretly loved it.
And now, after all that had happened, with each choosing a different side in a war not meant for the young to play vital parts in and marrying men that each loved? Why wasn't Bellatrix hexing her and taking her to her Dark Lord? More importantly, why was Bellatrix there?
"Why are you here?" she finally asked.
Bellatrix shrugged, and Lily's heart squeezed painfully. No matter the history between them, the dark haired woman could still make her hot and bothered, heavy on the hot and bothered.
"I was looking for your husband actually. He needs to die." She shook her head. "I still can't believe you snagged a pureblooded boy like James Potter. Mudbloods should stick to their own kind, though your kind really should be dead."
Another thing that did not change was the fact that Lily still thought that Bellatrix was slightly unhinged. She had to be, nearly all the Blacks were. "He's not here."
"I can see that." Now Bellatrix was back to being amused. "Since I cannot complete my objective, I can at least do something I've been wanting to do since I first saw you standing on that hill."
Bellatrix moved forward and surprised Lily as she gently kissed her. One hand curved around Lily's ample breast, rubbing the thumb over the very sensitive nipple, while the other curved over Lily's stomach. Lily could not help but lean into the older woman, deepen the kiss, and close her eyes.
Yet nothing lasted forever and Bellatrix stepped back with a solemn expression on her face. "I hope it's not you. I would hate if it was you."
Lily blinked. "What's not me?"
"Nothing. Nothing at all." Bellatrix stared at Lily's stomach and for a brief instant, Lily had the vague horror and panic that Bellatrix wanted to kill her child. Then the moment passed and Bellatrix was nodding to herself. "Take care of yourself, mudblood. If Potter doesn't treat you right, then I will hunt him down and delightfully kill him."
She heard noises rustling behind her and as she glanced over her shoulder to look, she heard the familiar pop of Apparation, and knew Bellatrix had left. James and Remus came running up the hill and James lifted Lily into the air, smothering her with kisses.
"Lily!"
She grinned and sweetly kissed her husband. With him, there was no confusion. Not like Bellatrix. The woman was forever her enigma. Lily mentally sighed and wished that Bellatrix was hers to being with. But no, the woman still remained her everlasting regret.
