Title: Seduction Of The Sea
By: Bridget McKennitt
A/N: I got inspired by the premiere's trailer and just Little Mermaid and Phoebe
in general. Spoilerish as far as the trailer goes.
The hustle and bustle of the little village finally slowed and quieted
as the sun went to sleep and the full moon rose in the sky. Phoebe peered out
from behind the door of her home to see if the coast was clear. She had to get
to the cove. She closed the door behind her and left.
Phoebe did not know when the seductive call of the sea pulled at her.
All she knew was that it drew her near. The little village of Haven had always
been her home. She had once thought that she was satisfied to live the rest of
her life there. Not anymore. Haven would never be a haven to her again.
She rested her hand on her heart as she remembered memories against her
will. The boy she thought she had loved did not return her affections. Eric
loved Ariel and nothing could change his mind. He had broken her heart and she
did not want to suffer from the pain. She wanted a life without feeling.
So Phoebe followed her heart. It led her to the cove and the beauty of
the place took her breath away. The moon's rays made the blue waters almost
glow with ethereal light and the soothing sounds of the waves calmed her down.
This was where she belonged.
She knelt on the rocks and gazed into the water. "Great Poseidon. I
beg of you, take my pain away!" Phoebe felt almost foolish for calling on the
god but she was adamant. He called to her and now she was here. She needed to
be free.
Phoebe touched the water and felt its silkiness. She had to be one
with the water. Her dress slid down her body as she dove under the surface of
the waves. As soon as she entered, Poseidon answered her call and began her
change. Where legs once were, scales appeared. Her legs melted into one as a
tail grew. Phoebe rolled underwater and broke through the surface with joy on
her face.
She was a mermaid; a denizen of the sea. "It's everything I've always
dreamed of," she exclaimed breathlessly. With a flip of her tail, she dove under
once more and swam away from the cove.

Phoebe spent her days and nights swimming and living within the moment.
There was nothing like being a mermaid. It was pure freedom. Her life on land
was a pale comparison to the beauty of the sea.
On one of her swims, she vaguely noticed a fishing boat above her on
the surface. However, she did not worry. They could never catch her. She was
free. She was about to head towards the deep when a splash alerted her. Someone
had fallen in. She raced back and saw that the man had been knocked unconscious.
He would die without help. Her arms wrapped around his body and pulled him
towards shore. The rescue rekindled a memory of long ago when she used to save
innocents daily.
She dragged him onto shore, careful not to beach herself while she was
at it. One glance told her that the man she had saved was none other than Eric.
She stroked his cheek and moved the hair away from his face. He was still
beautiful, but Phoebe felt nothing for him. She had a new love; the sea.
"Eric? Eric!" Phoebe heard someone calling out and she turned to see
Ariel heading their way. There were tears in her eyes as she thought she had
nearly lost her beloved. Ariel collapsed next to Eric and cried on his chest.
"You're alive, my love!"
Eric coughed water out of his mouth and Ariel cradled his head. "I'm
so glad you're alive," she whispered with love in her eyes. She then noticed
Phoebe and her eyes widened. "Phoebe? The village was so worried. We thought
something had happened to you."
"Something did," she dreamily replied as she motioned towards her tail.
Ariel's eyes followed and she gasped. "I'm a mermaid now."
"Oh, Phoebe. I--I..." The words could not come out of Ariel's mouth.
She was so shocked and full of guilt that perhaps she had driven her to this.
Phoebe smiled and shook her head. "It's everything I've always wanted.
Don't feel guilty." The waves came in and Phoebe went with it. She locked gazes
with Ariel before she left. "I'm not coming back." She plunged into the water
and left the old world behind. There was nothing left for her there. All she had
left, and needed, was the sea.
